![]() The default for most phd candidates is of course Word, and on the Mac that’s periodically been a beast competent at short writing but not so good at long writing. I of course also have Office 2011 for ‘other writing’ and for final formatting. The structure, the mechanism behind it, and the ability to compile to many formats (including ebook) and slice-and-dice your writing is wonderful. And it’s a great all-round writing package. So, I have adopted Scrivener for writing. In fact, I made a video on YouTube and a post here on my blog, and since it’s consistently my most popular blog post and video by a mile, there’s a lot of love for it. Devonthink Pro is one that I have just not managed to find an equivalent for – which should be the subject of a future post – and Scrivener is the other. Thank goodness!Īnd there are two items of software on the Mac that I have coveted and used a lot since converting to the Mac side. Of course, software development is a bit harder to get into (but then AppleScript is very good), but at least when Office 2011 came out they brought back VBA for Mac Office. Sure, the Macbook was expensive compared to the Windows equivalents, but then the software is generally cheaper and OSX just feels more bulletproof. ![]() On account of how my need for my computers to play well with others on a corporate network is less.Īnd, speaking as a Windows user of long standing, generally it’s been a Good Thing. So I thought that, as I am currently doing my phd full time, it would be a good idea to try out this Mac thing full time. I had sworn that Mr Gates’ hegemony had to deliver on Windows 7, and, although it was OK, it was not quite to the standard I wanted. Well, about 18 months ago I bought a new Macbook Pro.

Local acts traditionally open both days of the festival, but this year, only two artists, both playing on Saturday, are local: San Francisco chillwave producer Giraffage and San Jose punk-rapper Antwon. This year will feature legendary Walnut Creek lounge singer “Diamond” Dave Hosley West Oakland weirdo choir Jerk Church and the Oakland-based, ten-piece Prince tribute band The Purple Ones. The Cove expanded last year to also include the Porch Stage, which hosts local bands. Curated by the local Silent Frisco DJs, the music can only be heard through wireless headphones worn by attendees. On the music side, the popular silent disco, which was added in 2010, will return to an area of the festival called The Cove. ![]() There will also be four new box-truck-contained art galleries and other “surprises.” Horne estimated that more than one hundred local artists will contribute to the non-music aspects of the festival. That will return this year, as will Marco Cochrane’s massive “Bliss Dance” sculpture, which is now a permanent fixture on the island. In 2010, visual art, roaming performers, and interactive activities were incorporated into the festival, including Camp D.I.Y., a crafting tent curated by Kelly Malone of the San Francisco store Workshop. People need breaks from standing in front of the stage and listening to music.” The first year featured two stages and the festival’s now-flagship Ferris wheel, but Horne said everything else has evolved over time: “We challenge ourselves every year: ‘Okay, what haven’t we done before?’ We pride ourselves on not being a cookie-cutter festival. That said, the event has grown somewhat: The festival’s first year drew a crowd of 10,000 last year grew to 14,000, and this year is expected to edge toward 16,000. “I don’t know if there’s another festival where you can hear every band,” Horne added. To compete with the larger festivals, organizers have concentrated on adding new attractions to complement the musical performances, which take place on two stages, though never at the same time. Or spend 45 minutes in line for the bathroom.” “There are festivals where you pay a lot of money and you can only see a quarter of the bands playing. “We’re not trying to grow it to be a 50,000- or 25,000-person-a-day festival - that would change the entire feel,” Horne said. Now in its seventh year, Treasure Island hasn’t changed that mission. Noise Pop producer Stacy Horne said when planning started for Treasure Island’s inaugural 2007 festival, the concept was to bring Noise Pop’s intimate, indie aesthetic to an outdoor setting. Thom Yorke and his supergroup Atoms for Peace will headline on Saturday. We call it the ‘anti-music festival’ festival.” “We’ve tried not to go too mainstream it’s a discerning fan. ![]() “We’ve been very cautious in how we’ve grown it,” Scott said. The festival’s organizers, Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment (which also puts on the larger Outside Lands festival), admitted that while its size is limited by its location, the decision to cap this year’s attendance at 16,000 was also deliberate.Īnother Planet Executive Vice President Allen Scott said the organizers have taken a different approach with Treasure Island. ![]() In a time when music festivals are constantly expanding, Treasure Island Music Festival is staying true to its boutique reputation. ![]() It’s lean, mean, and did everything I needed at the time. I bought Textastic for my iPad and eventually switched to it on my Mac as well. I could launch them one-by-one by double-clicking on the macro name. That included recording many basic search-and-replace macros that were conveniently listed in a side panel. It had the features I needed at the time and an interface that suited my workflow. I continued experimenting with other text editors and eventually settled on Komodo Edit. After some time, though, I turned to Sublime Text, which was updated regularly. When I switched to Mac, I initially used TextMate. On Linux, my favorite text editors were Genie and Bluefish, though I also regularly used Gedit and Kate. I can sometimes be quite fussy about the code that is used and how it is laid out. I often edit content for the web in a text editor, viewing the HTML markup directly. I have been using them for decades, first in DOS, then Windows, Linux and now Mac. Quick NavigationĪ good text editor is one of my favorite tools. Other text editors are also extremely capable and have their strengths, focuses, limitations, and interfaces. It costs $80, but there’s no official time limit to the trial period, so you can get to know the app before purchasing. It’s a speedy, attractive, full-featured text editor for the Mac, Windows, and Linux. Our number one recommendation is Sublime Text 3. They tend to come with a basic set of features that can be extended through plugins. Text editors are also useful for small jobs like writing lists or jotting down notes. Under the hood, there are powerful features you can use to design a website, develop software applications, and write a novel. On the surface, a text editor may look plain, simple and boring, but that’s because you haven’t gotten to know it yet. That’s why many people still use powerful text editors that are over 30 years old, like Vim and GNU Emacs. The more familiar you become with it, the more useful you’ll find it. Finding one that’s just right is essential. That means those who use text editors have strong opinions about them. The best text editors tend to be incredibly powerful and highly configurable, making them a very personal choice. They’re most commonly used by developers, but also often by writers and note-takers. The character of Korben Dallas is the stereotypical figure of a Hollywood action-film protagonist whose aim is to save the world, a trope in itself 4. Therefore, this examination will focus predominantly on the two protagonists as well as the character of Ruby Rhod (the radio show host played by Chris Tucker). How heroism and gender are connected within the context of science-fiction is reflected in the development of the two protagonists, Leeloo and Korben Dallas (played by Milla Jovovich and Bruce Willis). The notion of gender is one of the key themes that the director has aimed to dissect in his film. The appeal of the main characters is associated with the fact that their physical appearance does not completely coincide with their emotional strength and intelligence, which is an interesting turnaround for an action movie. The Fifth Element is an action movie in which the stereotypical and traditional perceptions of gender roles are shifted and transformed in a way that is innovative and captivating for the audience. Therefore, gender development as portrayed in media has a significant impact on what society perceives as normal or traditional 3. The concept of gender development in modern media is a fundamental issue discussed by many scholars (e.g., Bussey and Bandura) because it influences some of the most important aspects of a society’s life, such as sociocultural opportunities, talents cultivated by individuals, conceptions people may hold about others and themselves, etc. At the same time, along with employing an abundance of tropes in his film, Besson was attempting to deconstruct and analyze the stereotypes and clichés, which resulted in a truly brilliant piece of cinematography 2. What is interesting is that the director and screenwriters of the film wisely used genre staples and tropes in the majority of scenes 1 however, there has not been enough in-depth research on them. A deep cycle battery is used to store electricity and release a steady current over time. The Autohil version is a little more customisable, and a little cheaper, but you’ll need to invest in upgrading to a paid app to manage multiple batteries at once, unless you are happy to manually switch between the monitors using the app. What is a deep cycle battery? This type of battery is the key component in many renewable energy systems. The Oricom version is more expensive, but comes with double sided tape to mount it more easily, and can monitor multiple batteries at once. The voltage will be displayed correctly, however, the profile built into the monitor is based on a regular lead-acid style battery rather than a Lithium battery, which means the charge state of the Lithium battery won’t be accurate because Lithium batteries voltage stays much more consistent during discharge than other types of batteries.Ī Bluetooth battery monitor can be a useful tool to understand your battery condition, and what might be driving that. You can connect a second monitor and switch to that, but you can’t view them at the same time without paying for a multiple monitor app. The key differences I noticed were that the Autohil version only allows one battery to be monitored at a time. In basic operation, both monitors were very similar, performing many of the same functions. Details were included in the instructions, and after a few minutes, I had both apps installed. From there, all I had to do was download the software. The first thing I noticed with the units was that the Autohil cabling felt a bit thicker than the Oricom unit, although the Oricom unit comes with double sided tape to stick it to your battery, where the Autohil one doesn’t.Ĭonnecting the monitors was as easy as easing off the nuts on the battery connections, sliding the clips in, and tightening again. They are designed to simply connect across the terminals of the battery, and also have built in circuit protection in case you wire them the wrong way. ![]() Out of the box, both the Oricom unit and the Autohil unit are very similar. The other thing that can be great about a battery monitor is connecting one where your battery may not be easily accessible as it can save time trying to get access to it with a multi-meter. If it is outside the acceptable ranges, that could help indicate an issue with the alternator rather than the battery. If you are having issues with your vehicle, the monitor can check the charging voltage to make sure it is normal. ![]() The voltage is useful as a measure of charge of the battery – as the battery depletes, the voltage drops, and once it gets below a certain level (usually 12V or below), then the battery is considered discharged, and may no longer start your vehicle. It allows you to see how the voltage drops with usage, see the current condition of the battery, understand the cranking voltage, and also measure the charging voltage of the battery. But what exactly do they do?Ī Bluetooth Battery monitor allows you to track the voltage of your battery via your smartphone. Both these devices are designed to connect to your battery and monitor the performance. The two battery monitors that I’ve reviewed are the Oricom Battery Sense Monitor, and the Autohil ABM2.
